Art for Parkinson's
Welcome to the Art For Parkinson's website.
The site is designed to be of interest to:
•
People with Parkinson's of whatever age, or artistic ability.
• Carers of people with Parkinson's.
• Parkinson's Disease Society local groups and field staff interested
in
creating their own programmes.
• Health and social care professionals.
• Anyone involved in the visual arts.
In 2002, The Parkinson's Disease Society granted a CREATE IT Millennium Award to set up the Art for Parkinson's project. Andy Daly, Head of Art and Design at a West London comprehensive school, applied for the award with friend and ex-colleague, Elizabeth Binch, after meeting Nancy Tingey, who was promoting art as a therapy for Parkinson's. Andy was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2001.
The
project aims to show that Parkinson's is no barrier to creativity and
demonstrate the particular benefits of art therapy to people with
Parkinson's by:
In the short term, during July 2003
Providing a two week Summer School of ‘sample' Art Therapy workshops for people with Parkinson's, and their carers.
Showcasing work made by people from Art for Parkinson's workshop programmes 1994 – 2000 in the UK as well as Australia in the exhibition ‘Catalyst' hosted at Kingston College's Penny Gallery, with exhibition catalogue and essay "Art for Parkinson's" by Nancy Tingey.
Providing a forum for discussion about the role of art as a therapy for Parkinson's with the launch of the book “ Arts Therapies and Progressive Illness” edited by Professor Diane Waller.
In the long term, via the Art for Parkinson's website and CD ROM
Providing information and support for local groups who wish to set up their own programmes.
Keeping a web gallery of work by people with Parkinson's.
Providing useful links and contacts.
" I
hope we can help to educate members of the public about the abilities of
people with Parkinson's, demonstrating that creativity is unaffected by the
condition. By attending sample workshops, people with Parkinson's and their
carers will be able to experience for themselves the therapeutic effects of
art as a therapy, encouraging the formation of continuing art groups for
people with Parkinson's." Nancy Tingey.
The Art for Parkinson's project gratefully acknowledges the support of the
Millennium Awards Commission via the Parkinson's Disease Society's ‘Create
It' Scheme.
